The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel has introduced a new sustainability initiative as part of its ‘Unapologetically Sustainable’ approach targeting reducing food waste and promoting environmental responsibility.

The coffee grounds recycling initiative called ‘Grounds for Growth’, repurposes used coffee grounds from the Hotel’s café and food and beverage services, offering them to the public free of charge.

Coffee grounds are typically discarded as food waste, which can contribute to landfill and unnecessary environmental impact. Through this initiative, the Hotel collects the used grounds, dries them, and repackages them using the original coffee bean bags. These bags are then made available at Café Latte within NHS Golden Jubilee and Hotel reception desk for staff, patients, guests, and visitors to take home and use back in their garden.

The recycled coffee grounds have a variety of practical uses, such as in gardens as a natural fertiliser and soil conditioner, helping to nourish plants and prevent pests.

The initiative is part of the Hotel’s wider commitment to sustainability and to using resources efficiently to minimise waste. Other activities include the reduction of single use plastics, and promotion of outdoor walking meetings.

Denis Flanagan, Commercial and Logistics Director at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel said: “We are always looking for new ways to reduce waste and support sustainability across our campus.

“This initiative allows us to take something that would otherwise be thrown away and turn it into a resource that benefits both the environment and the local community.”

Since its launch, the Coffee Grounds Recycling Initiative has been well received by staff and visitors. Within weeks of launch, staff, patients and visitors have returned to request more, prompting the Hotel to explore new packaging options to meet growing demand. The team is also exploring how to expand the scheme to other areas of NHS Golden Jubilee.

The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel continues to lead by example in its efforts to be unapologetically sustainable, creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious hospitality experience.
