Money Advice Scotland’s Annual Conference and Exhibition
Oct 25, 2018
We were honoured to host the 29th Annual Conference and Exhibition for Money Advice Scotland at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel in June 2018. The theme of the conference was ‘Counting the cost of living in debt’ in recognition of the growing prevalence of debts that are directly related to living costs including rent, council tax and fuel bills. When credit is used, it is often a safety net to meet the shock of rising prices in the context of stagnating incomes.
The organisers put together a vibrant programme of keynote speakers including Darren McGarvey (aka Loki) a range of workshop sessions exploring topics such as technology and vulnerable clients to the Child Poverty Act and stimulating ‘Big Discussions’ in the auditorium. Our conference centre worked really well for this annual event which needed a variety of meeting spaces and incorporated an exhibition for sponsors and supporters.
The conference was successful in bringing together a broad range of voices from across the sector including creditors, regulators, advisors and insolvency practitioners. The energy and enthusiasm coming out of the conference was palpable and it was an absolute pleasure to host at the Golden Jubilee.
Here is their feedback on how we delivered a top class environment and service to suit their needs.
Karen Dawson – Money Advice Scotland: “The team at Golden Jubilee did a fantastic job for us and were extremely patient and understanding when it came to those last minute additions and changes that always seem to go hand in hand with any sizeable event.”
Money Advice’s key requirements?
A two-day conference and exhibition in a great standard of venue, with good geographical accessibility.
Most important aspect of the conference for the organisation?
That everyone in attendance enjoyed our programme of events at this new location. This was our 29th annual event and we chose not to host at our previously preferred location, which we have used many, many times.
What made you decide to hold your event at the Golden Jubilee?
It was time to try a fresh, new location and it’s really pretty easy to get to for anyone needing to use public transport. The Golden Jubilee was able to provide the exhibition space, syndicate rooms and the auditorium we needed, as well as having more than enough bedrooms to accommodate those delegates requiring a full residential package. Staff were friendly and professional and, lastly, as a charity ourselves, we did like the charitable aspect of hotel profits supporting medical research at the Golden Jubilee Hospital.
Was there a social element? If so, what did this include? Did the team help organise this?
There are always delegates and speakers who require to travel to our event the day before it all kicks off. As most of these people are travelling solo, we organise a very informal get-together so that people have a chance to mingle and get to know some of the folks they’ll be spending time with over the next couple of days – and let’s face it – not everyone enjoys eating alone in a hotel restaurant. We organised a BBQ which the hotel catered well for us. We also had a gala dinner of around 100 guests and this is always viewed as a reward and a chance to let one’s hair down after a hard day of conferencing.
Any other thoughts on our team and the level of support staff provided?
We were particularly pleased with the feedback from our exhibitors. The Central Plaza provided a really engaging environment.
“We took on board the event team’s suggestion about serving lunchtime desserts in the exhibition area and that definitely got the networking going.
Summary by Nicole Smith, Event Planner at the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel:
“The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel had the privilege to host Money Advice Scotland’s two-day conference with exhibition in June.
“This was a wonderful conference and Karen’s feedback was very much appreciated. They were a terrific client! We were delighted that we were able to accommodate their requirements by holding all aspects of their event onsite including the conference, exhibition, bedrooms, BBQ and gala dinner. It really did demonstrate how all aspects of the venue can really work for a client requiring a variety of meeting spaces and an integral networking exhibition.”
“We hope to welcome Money Advice back in the near future!”
